Alex's Story

A week before her first birthday in 1997, Alexandra "Alex" Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. While going through treatments for her cancer, she decided that she wanted to help raise money for her doctors so they could help other children with cancer. She held her first lemonade stand fundraiser in her front yard at the age of four, and the story of the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation began.

While bravely battling her own cancer, Alex and her family continued to hold yearly lemonade stands in her front yard to benefit childhood cancer research. News spread of the remarkable sick child dedicated to helping other sick children. People from all over the world, moved by her story, held their own lemonade stands and donated the proceeds to Alex and her cause.

In August of 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised more than $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex's family - including brothers Patrick, Eddie, and Joey - and supporters around the world are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is the largest independent childhood cancer charity in the United States.

Volvo Cars for Alex

Alex's Lemonade Stand for Life is the exciting partnership between Volvo Cars and Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).  Over twenty years ago, Volvo Cars met Alex Scott, and joined in her thirst to help fund a cure for pediatric cancer. Alex's courage and ingenuity were the inspiration for the Volvo for Life Butterfly Award.

ALSF first caught the attention of Volvo Cars when Alexandra "Alex" Scott received an inaugural Volvo for Life award nomination. The award program honors hometown heroes doing extraordinary things in their communities. At nomination time, Alex had raised $45,000 for pediatric cancer-related research. Alex's determination and unwavering support for pediatric cancer research earned her a Volvo for Life Award at the 2003 ceremony in New York City.

In 2004, Alex set a remarkable goal: call upon the nation to raise $1 million to fight pediatric cancer before the year's end. Sadly, Alex passed away August 1 at the age of 8, having raised over $700,000, but before she died, Volvo Cars made Alex a promise to help her raise the million dollars. To keep the company's promise, it worked with its Volvo Cars retailer network to put their sales skills to the test - to sell lemonade for Alex. Their efforts were successful, resulting in hundreds of thousands raised to keep their promise.

Since then, Volvo Cars has shown unwavering support for the cause, helping to keep the inspiration and legacy of Alex alive. Volvo Cars sponsors The Lemon Ball, the Lemon Run, L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade, The Great Chefs Event NYC, The Great Chefs Event Chicago and Alex's "Original" Lemonade Stand events; a partner for The Million Mile; and a supporter of the Dollar for a Follow Twitter campaign. Volvo Cars has also donated vehicles for ALSF raffles.

For every lease or purchase of a new vehicle,
Volvo Cars of Cary will donate $10 to Alex's Lemonade Stand.

Our Mission And History

ALSF has received top ratings from Charity Navigator, GuideStar and America's Best Charities based on effectiveness, accountability and transparency.

Why We're Different

In 2000, when she was just 4 years old, our founder, Alexandra "Alex" Scott, held a lemonade stand in her front yard, raising $2,000. Alex was battling neuroblastoma and wanted to donate the money to help doctors find cures for all children battling cancer.

Meet Alex

Since that first stand, we have funded more than 1,500 cutting-edge research projects at 150 institutions in the U.S. and Canada. We focus on innovation through new, impactful projects like our Childhood Cancer Data Lab and Crazy 8 Initiative.

Where The Money Goes

With the help of our supporters we're propelling the world toward a future without childhood cancer. From hosting stands and events to joining the One Cup at a Time Club, everyone can make a difference and help find cures for childhood cancer.
